Amend the LWSD Bell Schedule for Student Well-being and Efficiency

The Issue

The implementation of a new bell schedule by the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) has raised concerns among students, their families, and educational professionals in the area. The change, which contains block days everyday and lengthened single periods to 80 minutes, has been disruptive and burdensome, leading to heightened stress and anxiety levels among students.

According to the American Psychological Association, excessive academic-related stress can lead to poor physical health, higher rates of anxiety, and lower academic performance. However, optimal length lessons, structured around the average student's attention span, can reduce stress, increase engagement, and boost academic outcomes. Research from The National Institute of Mental Health in the United States indicates that the average high school student cannot sustain focus for much more than 50 minutes, making the new 80-minute periods far too lengthy.

Given these findings, we call upon the LWSD administration to reassess the bell schedule considering students' mental health and optimal learning conditions. This petition is not just a plea but a staunch demand for providing a healthy learning environment that promotes both cognitive and emotional well-being!
