The Issue

We are four grade eight students attending a day school in Toronto. Our school runs a student-led project that has brought us to the attention of the impacts of coyotes in our city. Through our research we learned about a law currently allowing these creatures to be hunted with no limits or restrictions. After coming across this law, we felt the need to advocate for this matter and save the lives of coyotes in our community.

Although many people see coyotes as a threat, we are a much larger threat. Due to the law mentioned above, countless people have reported seeing a coyote in their area, feeling threatened, so hunters have come to the conclusion that coyotes are overpopulating and they frivolously hunt them. Although coyote attacks do occur, the amount of coyote killings is more than the number of times they have attacked humans. Coyotes are seen as a threat to humans because they commonly surround our property and invade areas they shouldn't. Coyotes do not choose to come near our property, and would prefer to thrive in their natural habitats, but sadly these places are being taken away from them due to infrastructure. Their homes are being replaced, forcing them into urban areas such as our properties. This causes them to become more used to humans and less fearful, leading to attacks.

If we don't work together to change this law, coyotes will keep getting hunted with no restrictions. Although this issue is a big one, it is rarely addressed. Our organization's focus is teaching our community how to co-exist peacefully with coyotes to reduce the fear felt towards them and the overall damage.

Our call is simple, but the stakes are high. We ask you to sign our petition, and work with us to protect the coyotes in our community. By supporting this petition you are bringing us one step closer to peacefully co-existing with these beautiful creatures. Sign below and join us in reducing the threat we pose.

Once we reach our goal, this petition will be sent to the minister of environment in Ontario,  Andrea Khanjin, to officially change the law.
