The Issue

I was watching an eagle nest in west Michigan, where an eaglet named Scout was being attacked by its sibling. Scout had been banded and was under observation, but the laws prevented anyone from intervening and rescuing the struggling eaglet. It was agonizing to witness the situation, knowing that the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, intended to protect these majestic birds, instead tied the hands of those who could have potentially saved Scout.

The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act was established to safeguard the revered symbols of American freedom and spirit. However, there are times when this rigid protection inadvertently leads to neglect, especially in cases like these, where intervention is crucial for the survival of individual eaglets. Current regulations prohibit any form of disturbance, including rescue operations for injured or endangered young.

It is imperative to consider amending the Act to allow qualified and certified wildlife experts to intervene in situations where juveniles are at significant risk due to sibling aggression or other avoidable threats. Amending the law in such a way would ensure that while the species as a whole remains protected, individual eagles are given a fair chance to survive life-threatening circumstances.

Empirical evidence and research support the proposal that controlled intervention by professionals does not impede the natural behaviors of these birds. Instead, such actions ensure the survival of young eagles who might otherwise fall victim to unfortunate natural or human-induced situations.

I urge lawmakers to consider the practices of other wildlife protection laws that successfully balance protection with necessary rescue efforts. By revising the regulations, we can create a system where Scout's story is heard, and future eaglets have a chance to thrive.

Sign this petition to urge legislators to amend the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act for the safety and well-being of our nation’s precious eaglets.
