Amend the Army Pet Policy

Amend the Army Pet Policy

The Issue

Hello, We are petitioning Corvias Military Housing & The Department of the Army to consider amending its pet policy & the Army Pet Regulations to allow exotics of the following in Family housing:

Non Venomous Snakes Less than 5'

Non Venomous Lizards/Geckos Less than 2'

Turtles/Tortoises

Semi Aquatic Amphibians Less than 6"

The reason I ask this is because many have expressed a strong interest in the above mentioned species as well as reasons listed in the video, my own son being a Ball Python enthusiast, Granted State Law would still apply in addition to the above mentioned restrictions so as to preserve the habitat from invasive species in the southern states but all of the above mentioned species are incapable of property damage, live in a contained dwelling, and pose no risk of becoming an invasive species given they would freeze to death during the winter or quickly fall prey to native animals. That said I have spoken with many that due to this type of policy have opted to live off post as well and with those that choose to live on post yet have children or are reptile enthusiast themselves are unable to responsibly keep animals of the above mentioned type. This would help to raise morale of soldiers and family who are unable to keep the aforementioned now as well as create another potential community within on post housing due to reptile groups and clubs that often form which can create a greater sense of community within our on post communities.
