Amend the Animal Welfare Bill to protect rescued pets

Amend the Animal Welfare Bill to protect rescued pets
The Issue
As a trustee of Basils Forever Sofa, a UK-based dog rescue charity that works tirelessly to rehome dogs from Romania, I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact we can have on animals who have known only suffering. However, the current wording of the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill threatens to undermine our efforts and place the very animals we strive to protect in danger.
The Bill aims to end the import of animals subjected to cosmetic mutilations, such as ear cropping and tail docking. While the objective is commendable, the legislation, if not properly amended, risks penalising rescues and, worse still, punishing the animals who have already endured so much. These unintended consequences could hinder rescue operations and prevent animals in desperate need from finding loving homes.
Consider this: many dogs arrive at our rescue having already been subjected to such cruel practices as ear cropping long before they ever reached us. Prohibiting their import without exception effectively dooms them to longer suffering or abandonment in their countries of origin. It's an outcome no animal lover can support.
As policymakers, it is crucial to carefully consider the broader repercussions of well-intentioned laws. Instead of a blanket ban, the Bill should be amended to include provisions that allow certified rescue organisations to import animals in need. Such measures will ensure that we can continue to provide sanctuary and a second chance at life for these helpless creatures.
Please join me in urging Parliament to amend the Animal Welfare Bill to reflect these considerations. Let us work together to protect and save animals who deserve a fighting chance at a better life. Sign this petition and share it with your network to make a change that matters.
