My name is a testament to resilience. I am almost three years clean from addiction and am striving every day to get my life back on track. However, due to owed back child support, my driver's license is suspended. This suspension has made it exceedingly difficult for me to secure employment and continue rebuilding my life because I cannot drive.

This predicament isn't unique to me alone; many South Carolinians are facing the same hardship. The current law in South Carolina suspends the licenses of those who owe back child support, creating a counterproductive cycle where individuals can't earn money because they can't drive, thus making it even harder for them to pay their debts and support their children.

A study by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) shows that license suspension policies do not necessarily lead to increased child support payments but often result in job loss (NCSL, 2013). It's clear that this policy does more harm than good - affecting not just the debtors but also their families who rely on them.

We propose an amendment that would restore suspended licenses for those owing back child support, allowing them an opportunity to secure work and ultimately provide better financial assistance for their children. We believe this change will be beneficial not only for individuals like myself but also our children who deserve consistent financial support.
