The Issue
What is SB 12?
Senate Bill 12 is a new Texas law that took effect September 1, 2025. While it claims to strengthen parental rights and transparency in schools, it also imposes sweeping restrictions on how educators and students can discuss or support gender identity and sexual orientation.
SB 12 bans or limits:
1. LGBTQIA+ student clubs like Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs)
2. Books and lessons featuring queer characters or themes
3. Teachers’ ability to use a student’s chosen name or pronouns — forcing them to “deadname” trans students
4. Routine health or counseling services without written parental consent
Though parts of the bill were created with good intentions, these sections go too far and harm Texas students.
Why this matters
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I know how deeply SB 12 impacts lives. Being forced to use a deadname or lose safe spaces like GSAs isn’t about policy — it’s about survival. Inclusive environments save lives by reducing depression, anxiety, and suicide risk among queer youth.
By silencing identity and removing support systems, SB 12 isolates students who need understanding the most. It also prevents educators from creating classrooms that reflect the diversity of the world we live in.
What we’re asking for
We are not calling for SB 12 to be thrown out entirely — only for it to be amended. Lawmakers must:
1. Remove the sections that ban GSAs, censor queer representation, and require “deadnaming.”
2. Protect educators and staff who affirm and support students.
3. Ensure that parental involvement does not come at the expense of students’ rights and dignity.
Texas schools should be safe and inclusive for every child. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to fix Senate Bill 12 and protect all Texans — regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.
