Amend Rugby Australia’s policy for safety and protection

Amend Rugby Australia’s policy for safety and protection
The issue
The sport of Rugby Union is built on the principles of respect and integrity, values that are cherished by every member and supporter of the sport. However, Rugby Australia’s current policies fall short in ensuring players and members of all levels the fundamental right to feel safe. The current policies and code of conduct is set up in a way that places Rugby AU members who are victims of domestic violence are faced with the heartbreaking dilemma that action can only be taken if the abuse transpires "within the context of the sport." Meaning if a Rugby AU member is a victim of harassment and or domestic violence at the hands of another Rugby AU member, Rugby AU organisations are only obliged to enforce the code of conduct and member protection policies once these behaviours have occurred in Rugby related activities e.g within club environments, trainings, on-field, and tournaments or competitions. This leaves members with the harrowing choice between their safety and the sport they deeply love.
In contrast, other sports organisations have taken progressive measures, instituting robust policies to protect members from such exploitation and harm. It's high time Rugby Australia and in specific context to Rugby Union Australia follow suit, demonstrating the same level of commitment and responsibility.
We urge Rugby Australia to amend its Member Protection Policy and Code of Conduct to mandate proactive measures when members report incidents of domestic violence or harassment, perpetrated by other members. These policies should ensure that withdrawal is not the sole option available to victims. Furthermore we are also urging Rugby AU to include stronger anti-victimisation protections to guarantee that no member is penalised for coming forward with their experiences.
Statistics on domestic violence reveal that sporting communities are not immune. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, it is estimated that 1 in 6 women and 1 in 16 men have experienced physical, sexual or emotional violence from a current or former partner since the age of 15. These numbers underline the urgent need for institutions like Rugby Australia to implement policies that are preventive, protective, and inclusive.
By taking decisive action, Rugby Australia not only enhances its commitment to player and member safety but sets a strong precedent for other sports organisations to follow. It is imperative that all members feel protected and confident that their concerns will be addressed with the seriousness they deserve.
Sign this petition to demand Rugby Australia revise its policies and create a safer environment for its community. Let's stand together to uphold the principles of respect and integrity upon which Rugby Union is founded.
