Amend Preston's Pet Limit Ordinance

Amend Preston's Pet Limit Ordinance
The Issue
My dogs are like my children. They are a vital part of my family. For people like me who find companionship and solace in their pets, the city ordinance restricting the number of dogs one can own is deeply concerning. Many of us would be devastated if we were forced to part with them due to an outdated and restrictive law. Currently, Preston’s pet ordinance limits the number of pets a household can own. While the intention behind this rule is to ensure responsible pet ownership and community harmony, it inadvertently penalizes responsible pet owners like myself who provide loving homes to their animals and depend on them for emotional well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pets can have significant mental health benefits, offering companionship, reducing anxiety, and helping alleviate feelings of loneliness. For those with emotional support animals, these benefits are even more pronounced. Restricting the number of pets a person can own without considering the needs and capabilities of the family is not just unfair, but it could be detrimental to the welfare of both the pets and their owners. I am calling on the city council of Preston, ID, to reconsider this ordinance and raise the current limit on the number of pets allowed per household. This change would reflect the diverse needs of our community members while still promoting responsible pet ownership. Implementing a system that considers factors such as household size, yard space, and the pets' role as emotional support animals could prove beneficial. Together, we can push for a more inclusive ordinance that respects the important bond between humans and their pets. We urge the city council to review and amend this ordinance to better serve our community's unique needs. Please sign this petition to support this critical change for Preston's pet-loving residents and their furry family members.
EDIT: The current ordinance states you cannot have more than 3 dogs within city limits or you must obtain a Commercial Kennel License. It also states you must obtain a kennel license if you plan to do boarding, breeding, training, treating, or handling of dogs. Upon speaking with the chief of police & clerk’s office- they claim you may only get a kennel license for boarding. Just goes to show it needs update for a number of reasons.
