Amend Ordinance 1934 Prohibiting Cabanas on North Wildwood, NJ Beaches

The Issue

DENIED BY MAYOR - The petition was submitted to City Council, Monday, April 15, when it reached 1000. The mayor responded April 17, denying the claim an 8' cabana does not take much more footprint than an 8' umbrella, citing some cabanas have elastic anchors extending beyond 8 feet.

The need for an ordinance for 2024 which limits the size of sunshades cannot be denied. However, the specific regulation of requiring a "circular" shape is troublesome, as it denies families the right to use equipment they have invested in and become familiar with installing.

As a resident of North Wildwood, NJ, I respectfully request City Council amend Ord 1934 to remove from 138-3V Section (1) the words "with a circular shape", and to allow for 8' square sunshades with sand-anchored tethering pieces that do not extend beyond the perimeter.

Families and seniors caring for younger children, have an easier time anchoring the sand-weighted tethers of a square sunshade, as opposed to circular sunshades that require strength to anchor below the ground surface.  Even a young child can fill the tethers with enough sand in 4 points to anchor the sunshade. The difference between the footprint of an 8' circular sunshade and an 8' square sunshade is negligible, as it is unlikely separate groups will position circular sunshades point to point.

Cabanas, contrary to what some may believe, contribute to the safety and enjoyment of our beach experience. They provide shade from harmful UV rays and their secure anchoring system prevents them from becoming airborne hazards.

North Wildwood is known for its beautiful beaches which are enjoyed by thousands every year. However, this enjoyment should not come at the cost of safety or comfort. The ban on cabanas limits choices for beachgoers who want protection from the sun's harmful rays - an issue that can't be overlooked considering that skin cancer rates are rising in New Jersey (source: American Cancer Society).

Furthermore, well-anchored cabanas pose less risk than loose items like umbrellas which can become dangerous projectiles in windy conditions (source: Consumer Product Safety Commission). By allowing properly secured cabanas back onto our beaches we can ensure a safer environment for all.

It's time we reconsidered Ordinance 1934 with these factors in mind. Let us work together to make North Wildwood's beaches safe and enjoyable spaces once again. Please sign this petition urging local authorities to amend Ordinance 1934 banning cabanas on North Wildwood's beaches.
