Amend Ohio Law to Allow Self-Defense Against Dog Attacks

The Issue

I was just recently a victim of an unprovoked dog attack. A pit bull from down the street got loose and attacked my dog, Jake. In the process of trying to save him, I got bitten by the same dog. Jake is okay, but still unacceptable! Currently, Ohio law prevents us from using deadly force in such situations. This restriction is absolutely ridiculous! My dog is not merely property, but a vital part of my family. Our personal property or possessions cannot attack or harm anyone, yet we are left helpless if a dog becomes aggressive.

Dog attacks are not as rare as one might think, and the individuals of Dayton, Ohio, deserve the right to protect themselves and their beloved pets from harm without fear of legal repercussions. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there are an estimated 4.5 million dog bites in the United States each year, and thousands of those result in emergency medical care. Our community shouldn’t have to wait until a situation escalates to a life-threatening level to take action to protect oneself or one's dog.

The law as it stands causes undue stress and fear among pet owners and families who want to feel safe in their own neighborhoods. Allowing the use of deadly force if an attacking dog threatens the life and safety of a person or their pet is a necessary amendment that acknowledges the real threat aggressive animals pose.

Preventative measures like better leash laws and stricter penalties for owners of consistently aggressive dogs are crucial but are not enough on their own. We should be empowered to act decisively if we or our pets are under attack, without facing potential legal consequences for defending our lives.

I urge lawmakers in Dayton, Ohio, to take immediate action to revise these outdated laws and consider the safety of both residents and their pets. Implementing this change could save lives and bring peace of mind to countless families across the state.

Please sign this petition to advocate for the right to protect our homes, our pets, and ourselves from aggressive animal attacks. Our voices can help change a policy that affects us all and ensure safety and security in our community. With your support, we can make a meaningful difference.
