Amend NYS Gun Laws to Protect Historical Reenactments

The Issue

Scores of historic sites and communities across New York State regularly host historical reenactments that attract thousands of residents and tourists. They commemorate significant events in our nation’s history, are educational, and bring tourism dollars to communities across the State. These events have been carried out safely and professionally by organizations large and small for decades.

Most of these events involve flintlock or other muzzle-loading firearms. Live ammunition is not allowed and strict safety rules are enforced. The firearms employed at these events pose little threat to public safety.  That is why we were surprised and shocked to learn that New York State’s new gun control law includes flintlocks and other historic muzzle-loading firearms in its scope.

We ask that the law be amended to exempt historic firearms. We also request that, until the law is amended, its application as it pertains to historic firearms be temporarily suspended. Many organizations depend heavily on revenue generated from these events. Discontinuing them will pose an economic hardship for event sponsors and communities that depend on tourism dollars to fuel their local economies.

Please help us maintain New York’s rich history and our ability to share it with the world.
