Amend Nevada City ordinance to allow skateboarding

Amend Nevada City ordinance to allow skateboarding
The Issue
As a local high school teacher in Nevada City, I've witnessed firsthand how critical skateboarding is as a mode of transport for many of our students. Skateboarding is not only a sustainable and eco-friendly way for them to travel, but it also fosters a sense of independence and community among our youth. Unfortunately, the enforcement of Ordinance 10.40.010(F), which explicitly bans skateboarding in the Historical District, is affecting their daily lives. The law currently states: “No person shall ride any such devices on any street in the historical district of Nevada City.” This has led to negative consequences such as fines being issued unjustly to young skateboarders. Imagine trying to get to school using a means that is good for the environment and your personal well-being, only to be fined for doing so. This is what many of our students face when they opt to use skateboards, seemingly targeted over other forms of transportation like bicycles or rollerblades that are not subject to the same scrutiny. Nevada City's Historic District should remain accessible for all and inclusive of sustainable modes of transportation. Currently, police officers are focused on enforcing this outdated rule by citing skateboarders. While the intent might be to keep the district safe, it ends up unfairly targeting our youth who are simply trying to go about their daily routines. As a community, we should be encouraging active transportation and the benefits it brings, both socially and environmentally. Therefore, we are calling on the Nevada City Council to amend this ordinance. By allowing skateboarding in the Historic District, we can promote a culture that embraces environmentally friendly transportation choices without compromising safety. Sign this petition to support an amendment to Nevada City's Ordinance 10.40.010(F) and allow skateboards to roll freely in our Historic District. Together, we can create a more inclusive and forward-thinking community.
