Amend Local Ordinance to Permit 4/6 Backyard Hens On Less Than One Acre

The Issue

I am a resident of East China Township, MI, and I have been raising hens in my backyard. Recently, I received a letter from the Township instructing me to remove them due to the current local ordinance that restricts keeping hens on parcels under one acre. I'm heart broken. The current ordinance allows for 6 poultry on one acre or more. I am asking for the allowance of 4/6 on up to one acre. I think This is not just about me; it's about all residents who wish to raise hens for their benefits.

Raising backyard hens has numerous advantages including providing fresh eggs, natural pest control, contributing to sustainable living practices and most importantly backyard chickens provide joy.

Many cities across America allow urban chicken farming even on small plots of land. For example, Marine City allows up to 2, Clay Twp permits 6 on parcels less than 2 acres, Ann Arbor permits up to six hens on residential property regardless of its size.

We urge East China Township authorities to reconsider this rule and allow backyard hen raising on parcels under one acre. Please sign this petition if you support our cause right here at home.
