Amend Legislation to Allow Responsible, Private Collection and Display of Swords

The Issue

I am a proud sword collector, a hobby that has not only enriched my understanding of history but also offered me a unique form of artistic expression. Yet, as it stands today, those who share this passion of mine face restrictions under current laws that outright ban the private possession and display of swords. We believe these laws unfairly target responsible collectors and enthusiasts, infringing upon our freedoms and neglecting the importance of context and individual responsibility. Realistically, kitchen knives and chisels can be used as weapons, but to ban them completely is ridiculous, therefore, please apply sensible and practical laws.

The restrictions target all types of swords without considering the variety within the category. For example, many blunt-edged ceremonial swords that pose no real threat fall under the same category as combat swords. Furthermore, the laws do not take into account that responsible collectors store their swords safely and securely, with no intention of wielding them for nefarious purposes.

We propose that the legislation be edited to allow for exemptions, where individuals can demonstrate safe storage and non-aggressive usage. Such a change would not only parallel the laws surrounding firearm ownership, but would also give respect to collectors and enthusiasts who treat swords as pieces of art or historical significance, not as weapons of harm.

The time has come for a more nuanced approach, which strikes a balance between public safety and the rights of individuals. We are asking for the respect and recognition of responsible sword collectors as we seek to chase our passion unhindered. Please, sign the petition and support our right to collect and appreciate the art of swords responsibly and safely.

(Obviously these swords should not be permitted in public areas without a permit or valid, lawful reason)
