Amend Laws Which Prohibit Shooting Down of Privacy-Infringing Drones

Amend Laws Which Prohibit Shooting Down of Privacy-Infringing Drones
The Issue
I am a regular citizen experiencing an unprecedented invasion of my privacy caused by an unwelcome drone. The drone has become a recurring aspect of my life, relentlessly surveilling me at home, tracking my every move when outside and even following me to distant cities. Despite notifying law enforcement and having an active case number, there has been no respite from this mechanical voyeur's constant surveillance, effectively turning my life into a troubling reality show. This represents a severe intrusion into my personal life and it highlights a deeper issue that concerns us all.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently classifies drones as aircraft, making it a federal crime to shoot at or interfere with one, punishable by up to 20 years in jail and substantial fines (FAA, 2018). Therefore, citizens are left with limited options for defending their privacy.
Amid rising incidents of privacy violations, drones pose a significant challenge to fundamental rights and liberties. This has been noted in a study by the Bard College Center for the Study of Drone, where they found numerous news reports of individuals shooting down drones that were allegedly spying on them. Unfortunately, these individuals face legal consequences for their actions.
We need to reconcile our laws with the increasing prevalence of drones in order to protect our rights to privacy. The FAA needs to consider revising their policies on drone misuse and to take into account victims of invasion of privacy such as those like myself. The laws need to be updated to reflect new technologies and the threats they can pose to personal privacy if misused.
