Amend Laws for XL Bully Breeds in Shelters to Prevent Unnecessary Euthanasia

The Issue

My dog, a beloved member of our family, is considered an XL breed. We were fortunate enough to adopt her before the law restricting the adoption of such breeds came into effect. However, thousands of dogs like ours are not as lucky. They are left languishing in shelters because they can no longer be adopted out due to their breed and size classification. This leaves charity kennels shouldering hundreds of pounds annually just to keep these dogs registered or face the heartbreaking alternative - euthanasia.

This is not just about my dog or those currently in shelters; it's about every potential XL bully breed that may end up homeless due to circumstances beyond their control. These dogs are often misunderstood and unfairly stigmatized because of their size and breed type.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), specific breeds are not inherently dangerous, but it's often human actions—like neglect, abuse or lack of proper training—that lead a dog to engage in behavior that can be dangerous (ASPCA). It's time we stop punishing these innocent animals for human failings.

We propose amending laws regarding XL bully breeds so they can be adopted and registered as a banned breed once adopted. This will prevent healthy dogs from being euthanized simply because they fall under a certain category defined by measurements rather than behavior or temperament.

It's time we give these animals a chance at life with loving families instead of condemning them based on misconceptions and prejudice against their breed type.

Please sign this petition if you believe all dogs deserve love and care regardless of their size or breed type.
