The Issue

Having worked closely with the Georgian Triangle anglers association, the hatchery and having countless conversations with fishermen and various stakeholders involved in fishing. One of my greatest passions is engaging kids with outdoor activities, particularly through fishing. However, the current regulation of only allowing one rod per person in a boat when trolling for salmonids in Georgian Bay poses a significant challenge. It not only dampens the excitement and momentum of fishing but also affects the enthusiasm of young anglers.

Georgian Bay is the only part of the Great Lakes where, on the Canadian side, we are limited to one rod per person. Contrast this with other parts of the Great Lakes in Canada, where two rods are permitted per person, or even the American side, where three are allowed. This disparity creates an uneven playing field and restricts the full enjoyment of the fishing experience in Ontario.

By changing the regulation to allow two rods per person, we ensure that enthusiasts, especially children, remain engaged and excited throughout the fishing adventure. Increasing rod limits in boats can significantly enhance the fishing experience by increasing the chances of catching fish, maintaining interest, and fostering a lifelong passion for fishing in the younger generation.

This proposed change does not alter the limits concerning how many fish can be retained; it solely enhances the process of fishing itself, making it more efficient and enjoyable without impacting fish populations negatively. Aligning Georgian Bay's regulations with the rest of the Great Lakes will standardize our approach and support the recreational and cultural value fishing holds in Ontario.

In light of these insights, I urge relevant authorities to reconsider and amend the current fishing regulations for Georgian Bay. This adjustment is crucial for cultivating a vibrant fishing community and ensuring the sustainability and enjoyment of this beloved tradition for future generations. I invite you to stand with me in advocating for this change by signing the petition.
