Amend Florida Statute 316.081 - Make Left-Lane Camping a Criminal Traffic Offense

Amend Florida Statute 316.081 - Make Left-Lane Camping a Criminal Traffic Offense
The Issue
Dear Fellow Floridians, Snowbirds, Tourists, and Victims of Interstate Psychological Warfare,
We, the undersigned, hereby call upon the Florida Legislature to amend Florida Statute 316.081 and elevate chronic left-lane camping from a mild traffic infraction into a rigorously enforced criminal traffic offense.
Why? Because civilization itself depends on it.
Florida’s highways, particularly in South Florida, have devolved into a rolling sociology experiment where one individual in a beige crossover SUV, traveling exactly 0.4 MPH below the speed limit in the far-left lane, can singlehandedly collapse traffic flow for tens of thousands of people.
This must end.
The Current Crisis
Every day across Florida:
- The left lane, legally intended for overtaking, is occupied indefinitely by drivers who believe “I’m already going fast enough” is a valid transportation policy.
- Entire platoons of vehicles accumulate behind one oblivious driver who appears spiritually bonded to the left lane.
- Drivers attempting to pass are forced into dangerous lane changes resembling a Formula 1 qualifying session mixed with a hostage extraction.
- I-95, the Turnpike, and I-4 become linear parking lots fueled by ego, confusion, and complete disregard for traffic engineering principles.
Traffic experts worldwide recognize a simple truth:
Lane discipline improves traffic flow.
Germany understands this.
Japan understands this.
Even New Jersey understands this.
Yet Florida, home to some of the widest highways in America, has somehow transformed the passing lane into a scenic observation deck.
The Human Cost
The consequences are severe:
- Increased congestion
- Road rage incidents
- Unsafe weaving maneuvers
- Reduced emergency response mobility
- Elevated fuel consumption
- Countless missed dinner reservations
- At least three existential crises per commute
Meanwhile, productive citizens attempting to travel efficiently are trapped behind someone pacing a semi-truck for 14 uninterrupted miles while apparently searching for Atlantis with their GPS.
Proposed Legislative Changes
We propose that Florida Statute 316.081 be amended to include:
1. Enhanced Criminal Penalties for Chronic Left-Lane Obstruction: Any driver who remains in the left lane while impeding the natural flow of traffic, absent active passing, should face escalating penalties including:
- Mandatory fines
- Points against license
- Mandatory traffic school titled: “The Left Lane Is Not Your Living Room”
- Community service involving placement of “KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS” signs
2. Aggressive Statewide Enforcement: We urge the Florida Highway Patrol and local agencies to prioritize enforcement with the same intensity currently reserved for:
- illegal window tint,
- expired registrations,
- and drivers going 8 MPH over the limit on an empty road at 2:00 AM.
3. Public Education Campaign: Florida should launch a statewide awareness initiative explaining:
- the purpose of the passing lane,
- the science of traffic flow,
- and the revolutionary concept that other people also exist.
Suggested slogan:
“Move Over, Florida.”
Simple. Elegant. Patriotic.
This Is Bigger Than Traffic
This petition is not merely about driving.
It is about restoring order.
It is about accountability.
It is about reclaiming the final fragments of sanity on Florida roadways.
Because freedom does not mean occupying the left lane indefinitely while matching the speed of a landscaping truck and listening to Jimmy Buffett at maximum volume.
The Founding Fathers did not fight tyranny so someone in a Nissan Rogue could create a 4-mile rolling roadblock on I-95.

Together, we can build a Florida where:
- passing lanes are actually used for passing,
- traffic flows as intended,
- and motorists no longer age visibly during a 12-mile commute.
For the future of transportation.
For the preservation of mental health.
For Florida.
