Why this petition matters

Started by Greenply Plywood

Greenply Industries, one of India’s largest interior eco-friendly infrastructure companies is taking forward its green initiative, wherein we are urging the citizens of our country to discourage manufacturing, selling, and using plastic Tiranga this Independence Day. A large population is aware of the menace of using plastic Tiranga and its harmful impact on our environment and prefers paper or fabric Tiranga. However, they tend to ignore the stick on which Tiranga is mounted which is often made of plastic.

Over several years, the citizens of India have noticed that the Tirangas which are being produced and sold in mass quantities all over the country, especially by vendors on the roads uses stick made of plastic to mount the flag. Surprisingly the Flag Code of India, 2002 specifies the material of Tiranga but is silent on the material of the stick to be used by the manufacturers.

The Government of India has already banned 19 types of single-use plastic from 1st July 2022 and has pledged to eliminate single-use plastic by the end of the year 2022. In its attempt to protect the environment, the government plans to curb 380 million tons of plastic produced each year, about half of which are single-use items like packaging, cutlery, and straws. At least 14 million tons of plastic get swept into the oceans every year, which even first-world countries are struggling to eliminate.

So, in its attempt to support this green initiative, Greenply, as an environmentally and socially responsible company wishes to float this idea through a petition on this platform that urges the government to amend the Flag Code of India, 2002 to prohibit the use of plastic, including plastic straws on which the Tiranga is mounted, or any other use of plastic in the making of Tiranga whether it is a flag or a pole/stick and other alternative environmental friendly materials like bamboo and wood should be strictly adopted instead of plastic. This petition aspires to collect signatures from the citizens of India which will thereafter be submitted to the President of India for the Amendment of the flag code 2002.
