Amend Dog Legislation for harder consequences on dog attacks on humans and other animals.

Amend Dog Legislation for harder consequences on dog attacks on humans and other animals.
The Issue
In an incident that shattered our once peaceful and joyful family life, our beloved miniature dachshund, Phoebie, was tragically killed by an unleashed dog that escaped its garden while we were walking my children, aged 8 and 9, to school. The horrific scene of a collarless dog attacking Phoebie is a memory that has left deep emotional scars on my children. Their terror was palpable, and to this day, they still carry an overwhelming fear of dogs, triggered by the sound of barking or the sight of a dog approaching too quickly. What makes this event even more devastating is the lack of accountability – the person responsible for the dog was only issued a caution, and the dog was returned to its owner. Meanwhile, we are left with traumatised children, vet bills, and the ashes of our beloved Phoebie in an urn.
As of October 2024, my children continue to struggle with the emotional aftermath of that day. They avoid certain dog breeds, flinch at barking, and feel a rush of anxiety if a dog moves suddenly toward them. Their recovery has been slow, and the trauma lingers in ways we hadn’t anticipated.
What is even more worrying is how much worse the situation could have been. Had Phoebie not borne the brunt of the attack, it could have easily been my children who were injured, or worse. Phoebie’s small size made her especially vulnerable, and while we are heartbroken over her loss, it’s terrifying to think what might have happened if the aggressive dog had targeted one of my children instead. The fact that this dog is now back with its owners, seemingly without any significant consequences, fills us with fear. We can only hope it is never given the chance to attack again.
This issue goes far beyond our personal experience. Dog attacks are on the rise, they are claiming both human and pet victims. Every year, countless pets like Phoebie are killed in similar incidents, while humans also suffer injuries from uncontrolled dogs. The Veterinary Medical Association has highlighted dog-on-dog attacks as a leading cause of pet fatalities, yet current legislation barely holds owners accountable. The penalties are minimal, doing little to deter irresponsible pet ownership or prevent these devastating incidents from happening again.
The time for change is now. Lawmakers must take immediate action to revise current dog legislation, ensuring stricter consequences for owners who fail to control their pets or allow aggressive dogs to roam freely. These revisions should include harsher penalties for attacks on both humans and animals. Stronger laws could not only deliver justice to families suffering from these tragic events but also serve as a powerful deterrent, reducing the likelihood of future attacks.
We cannot allow this cycle of pain and fear to continue. It’s time to protect innocent pets and their families from the dangers posed by irresponsible pet ownership. Please sign this petition in memory of Phoebie, and to help drive the legislative changes needed to stop these tragic attacks. Together, we can ensure that no more families have to endure the heartbreak we’ve experienced and that justice is finally served for Phoebie and countless others like her.
