Amend Clovis Unified School District's Dress Code for Fairness and Equity

The Issue

As a deeply concerned member of the Clovis, CA, community, I am calling for an immediate amendment to the Clovis Unified School District's dress code policy, particularly regarding the current 5-inch inseam shorts requirement for girls. The enforcement of such a requirement unfairly and disproportionately impacts our young girls compared to their male counterparts due to the scarcity of such clothing in stores. For our sons, tailored shorts that fit the 5-inch inseam requirements are easily accessible, but for our daughters, finding these shorts is a nearly impossible task.

Furthermore, these policies are not just inconvenient but pose potential violations of Title IX, a federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in schools receiving federal funding. The existing dress code inadvertently creates a dynamic where young female students are subjected to scrutiny based on their attire, undoubtedly influencing their school experience negatively.

We postulate a more equitable change: a shortening of the required inseam to a minimum of 3 inches. Such a change would not only uplift the morale of our female students by removing an unfair burden, but also promotes a more just and empowering environment for all.

It's time for us to address the unfair standards and unnecessary obstacles posed by the current policy. We encourage Clovis Unified School District to reconsider and amend its dress code policy, moving our educational environment one step closer to equality and fairness. Your signature can change the dress code, and make a difference in the lives of our young girls in Clovis Unified School District. Please sign this petition today.
