Amend Clear Fork Dress Code

The Issue

The dress code at Clear Fork Middle and High school is outdated and in need of change. While our children are growing and changing every day and developing their self esteem and confidence, they are also being disallowed comfort during their school day due to the strict dress code. The dress code currently includes the “3x3x3” rule, which requires 3 inches of fabric over the shoulders and limits necklines to 3 inches below the collar bone and shorts/skirts/dresses to 3 inches above the knee. Not only are clothes fitting these restrictions very difficult to find, but our children's various body types do not deserve a one size fits all rule of this kind. The Clear Fork dress code also does not allow leggings  without a shirt overtop that comes to the fingertips. This leaves our children with the option of jeans or uncomfortable dress pants in a school that has been notoriously hot in the warmer months. In researching school dress codes from the other public schools in our area (Ontario, Madison, Lexington, Fredericktown) I found that no other schools have dress codes that are as restrictive as Clear Fork.  There definitely should be rules against distractive and overly revealing attire, so I propose that the Clear Fork School Board amends the current dress code to be more in line with the other schools in the area so that our teenagers can feel comfortable at school without fear of punishment.
