Amend City Codes to Allow Emotional Support Animals Like My Pig, Nico

The Issue

I'm a mother of six children, a survivor of PTSD, bipolar depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Two years ago, I adopted an emotional support pig, Nico, who has been a pivotal part of my struggles. It's with Nico that I found the strength to stay sober and cope with my mental health issues. However, city codes in Zanesville, OH, USA are forcing me to remove Nico from my home, potentially disrupting my progress and wellness.

There's a discernible, evidence-based link between the presence of emotional support animals and improved mental health outcomes. While dogs and cats are traditionally recognized as such animals, pigs like Nico can also offer immense emotional support (Source: The American Journal of Psychiatry)

Nico isn't just an ordinary pig; he is my emotional support animal and my best friend. He's played an instrumental role in keeping me sober and helping me manage my mental health conditions. Disrupting this connection could lead to devastating consequences. The mental and emotional health of individuals matters and it's high time the city codes in Zanesville reflect this understanding.

Implementing a change in these restrictions will not only provide relief for me, but also for others within the community who may be facing similar struggles. Therefore, we are asking the city to consider this request, enact more inclusive legislation, and subsequently help maintain the mental health of its citizens.

And just a side note, Nico was not reported for being loud or messy outside. He hadn’t disrupted anyone’s peace or caused any foul smell what so ever. Nico spends most his time indoors. I made a post about Nico on social media after a neighbor made a comment about me not being aloud to have him. Someone who saw my post reported me and now I’m heart broken and hoping you all can support me and help me keep my companion animal Nico!
