Breaking Update:
Trudeau announced yesterday the expansion of Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to include individuals making less than $1,000 a month due to COVID-19. Previously, CERB required that an individual make no income to qualify, which left many self-employed and part-time workers falling through the cracks. With the recent expansion, self-employed and part-time workers with incomes impacted are now eligible for CERB, so long as they make less than $1,000 per month.
The amendment isn’t perfect, but it is a significant improvement and will go a long way in addressing the gap for many self-employed & part-time workers.
Clarification FAQ:
We’ll be publishing a FAQ update the following week for many common questions we have gotten on Facebook. Hopefully, we will have a more definite answer on the tricky ones as well, including whether or not “Income” is defined as net income, gross income, or revenue for business owners.
Thank You for Your Endearing Support
We are delighted to have played a part in advocating for this amendment that will help tens of thousands of Canadians during this difficult time. It's been a very successful campaign and I want to take a moment to express our gratitude.
I want to thank everyone who took the time to share their stories with us and help raise awareness for the campaign. We really couldn’t have done it without all of you.
Special thanks to Jenny Kwan, MP for Vancouver East, for discussing the issue of CERB with us at length, helping us raise awareness with the media, and taking our message to Ottawa. It’s reassuring to know that we have hard-working MPs representing the interest of Canadians and our country during challenging times.
Together we are proof that our democracy works when our government and citizens work with each other.
