Amend Canadian Immigration Laws to Allow Reformed US Citizens Entry

The Issue

This petition is rooted in a deeply personal story. A dear friend of mine is in a relationship with a US citizen who, despite having completed his sentence and probation for an offense committed over five years ago, is denied entry into Canada. His only wish is to join his partner and start anew in the country she calls home.

Canada's current immigration laws are stringent on individuals with past criminal records, irrespective of their reformation or the time elapsed since the offense. This policy has resulted in countless families and loved ones being kept apart, causing emotional distress and hardship.

According to data from Statistics Canada (2019), approximately 7% of Canadians are involved in bi-national relationships. That's over 2 million people potentially affected by this law if their partner has a record.

We understand the need for security measures; however, it's important that these laws also consider individual growth and rehabilitation. Those who have served their sentences should be given an opportunity for redemption and not be perpetually punished for past mistakes.

We urge Canadian lawmakers to review these policies with empathy and fairness at heart - considering amendments that would allow reformed US citizens entry into Canada after they've demonstrated good conduct over a significant period post-sentence completion.

Help reunite families torn apart by inflexible immigration laws. Sign this petition today to advocate for change that values rehabilitation over punishment.
