I am writing this petition as a retired senior resident of Pearl Street in Brantford, Ontario, where I have lived peacefully for eight years. For years, I parked in front of my house without issues; however, last week, I was taken aback to find three parking tickets on my car. To my dismay, only three days later, my car was unceremoniously towed and impounded. This entire ordeal has put me out over $500.

Our current bylaw mandates that residents move their vehicles every 24 hours, effectively penalizing those of us who do not have driveways. The requirement not only disrupts our daily lives but is also a real burden for someone like me, who has arthritis in my knees, making it difficult to walk long distances. Many of us are forced to move our cars unnecessarily and then walk back sometimes as far as a block or more under conditions that aren't ideal for seniors or those with mobility issues.

The time has come for Brantford to reconsider its 24-hour parking bylaw to better support residents who, like me, are affected by this rule. Other cities have more accommodating parking policies, and there is no reason Brantford cannot adopt a similar approach. We propose an amendment to this bylaw that would allow residents of Pearl Street and similar areas to park for extended periods without the constant threat of fines and towing.

A practical solution could be to issue residential parking permits, allowing verified residents to park on their street indefinitely without the 24-hour move requirement. This would alleviate undue stress and financial burden on residents, particularly the elderly and those with physical limitations.
