The Issue
As a dedicated and passionate licensed cosmetologist, I have always strived to uphold the standards and diversify the practices within the beauty industry. It deeply concerns me to see the Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists of New Mexico underrepresented in terms of active licensed professionals, particularly in the 'Hairstylist' category. Currently, there are only 15 active Hairstylist licenses, with merely 6 of them being from 2021 or older. Compare this to the robust numbers we see in other categories—Manicurist/Pedicurist professions hold about 1300 active licenses from 2021 or earlier, and the Esthetician field boasts roughly 950 active licenses from the same timeframe. This notable disparity emphasizes a critical need for change.
The limited number of active Hairstylists points to potential challenges in obtaining well-rounded, inclusive guidance for the Board. It also poses a risk of not fully capturing the diverse spectrum of professional expertise within New Mexico's beauty industry. My proposal is to broaden the criteria for board vacancy roles. Instead of solely focusing on the Hairstylist category, we should include Manicurists, Pedicurists, and Estheticians. This change will ensure a more encompassing representation of active professionals who can contribute their unique perspectives and insights.
Implementing this amendment would not only fill board vacancies more swiftly but would also fortify the board’s ability to make informed, balanced decisions that affect our industry. A board that fully represents the current landscape of licensed professionals is better equipped to advocate for all areas of cosmetology, ensuring our standards and practices reflect the needs and voices of our entire community.
The statistics clearly reveal where the active and engaged personnel lie, and it's crucial to recognize these professions in board representation. By amending the qualifications, we can create a board that truly mirrors our industry's diversity and vigor. I urge The Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists of New Mexico to reconsider their current criteria and embrace this change.
