Amazon: Prioritize Green Shipping for Big Deals Day

The Issue

Amazon is the world’s largest online shopping platform, yet it has the least green shipping options of any major online retailer. This year, Prime Day came with massive deals and a record number of sales for Amazon, with global revenue of $12.9 billion. With this profit comes responsibility. The last Prime Day event resulted in a staggering 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Consumers are tasked with paying for and managing the plastic waste that arrives in their homes. Once the packaging leaves the Amazon facility, it is our problem alone to deal with at our expense!

Not to mention the planet - which we need if we wish to continue breathing clean air, drinking clean water, and eating nourishing food.

Amazon is now a permanent part of our modern consumer culture, but Amazon needs to be part of the solution and stop passing the plastic waste problem on to its customers. If the largest online shopping platform did just a little bit more to empower its customers to choose plastic-free options, filter up eco-conscious shippers, or offer its merchants viable biodegradable alternatives like other commerce platforms do (Garmentory and ECOENCLOSE), the impact would be BILLIONS less of plastic packages floating around our seas, poisoning our soil or burning in our air.

It's time for Amazon to acknowledge that its customers are tired of managing its excessive waste and that having the lowest prices does not mean having the lowest standards. This year, Amazon will make record profits with not just one Prime Day event but two. Amazon Big Deals Day is happening early this October and will be similar to the Prime Day event that took place in July.

With Big Deals Day just around the corner, I want Amazon to commit this second Prime Day to sustainability. If you had all the money, tech, and brainpower to change the dire trajectory this planet is headed on in a massive way, why wouldn’t you?

That's why I’m calling on Amazon to implement three crucial initiatives:

1. 'Green Shipping' Option:
Amazon should provide a 'Green Shipping' or 'Eco Shipping' option, allowing customers to choose minimal waste and biodegradable materials for their orders. This simple choice can significantly reduce the environmental impact of packaging materials.

2. 'Green Shippers' Filter:
Like the Amazon Prime filter, introduce a 'Green Shippers' filter. Sellers who commit to eco-friendly shipping practices, like avoiding plastic filler, padding, and external packaging (except when necessary, as with liquids), should receive this label. It will empower eco-conscious shoppers to make better purchasing decisions.

3. Green Packaging Marketplace:
Other major retail sites like Garmentory give their sellers access to discounted Eco-Friendly packaging and shipping supplies. See here: https://www.ecoenclose.com/garmentory

By incorporating these changes, Amazon can lead the way in sustainable e-commerce practices and go down in history for reducing plastic waste rather than exponentially growing it. Making these initiatives part of Amazon Big Deals Day is a crucial step towards a greener future.
