Good morning everyone,
As hinted in last night's update, today we announced a re-imagined version of one of the suicide shirts that I personally found most disturbing.
Check it out at https://www.booster.com/suicideshirt
You can also watch the interview that mentions it here: http://goo.gl/Nd5OZ6
You probably recognize the image that it's based on. The one with the person sitting back, popcorn in hand, watching someone kill themselves.
It was making fun of how much of society simply doesn't do one of the most effective methods of suicide prevention: getting up off your seat to help! It was telling those who are suffering and those who love people who are or were suffering that, while suicide is preventable, it's funny not to.
That's not acceptable.
Our new image shows what that scene could have looked like. Rather than sitting back and watching, our spectator turns into a hero. Someone who reaches out, even though they had the option not to.
The new image still shows a noose. This makes me uncomfortable - as it should make everyone else uncomfortable too. But, there's a right way and a wrong way to talk about suicide. The wrong way is to make fun or give people the idea that suicide is a legitimate option. It's not.
However, it's also not helpful to avoid the topic and it's symbols completely, to push it into the darkness and leave it unspoken. That's stigma, and it kills.
Instead, we can be encouraging a more constructive, hopeful, recovery-based conversation around suicide. One that reminds attempt and loss survivors, and everyone impacted by suicide, that their experience and their voice matters. That they matter.
That you matter too.
Proceeds from the sale of our counter-shirt (https://www.booster.com/suicideshirt) will benefit mental health awareness and suicide prevention efforts. We'll decide on which organization(s) best fit that mandate considering our global community with an online poll.
Suggestions for recipients are also welcome and encouraged! Send them along in the comments section here, or directly to me on Twitter (https://twitter.com/markhenick) or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/markhenick/).
Without your voice, the world would be an awfully quiet place.
Thanks for your noise.
Mark
