Hello everyone,
It's been almost a month since we let the world know that it's not OK to make fun of suicide, especially not for a profit. What a month it's been.
Since you started speaking up, Amazon removed many of the shirts that we pointed out. Yes, there are still plenty available, but you made a difference. I hope that you will remain as diligent in reporting them as I am.
Likewise, while Amazon did not publically acknowledge this issue, they did respond - and apologize - on an individual level as people contacted them.
All of this raises awareness for one of the most troubling public health problems of our generation. Suicide is preventable, yet for too many it is not prevented. That must change.
Change starts by speaking up, just like this.
The voices of suicide attempt survivors must be heard, because we've been to the edge and came back to help others. The family and friends who have lost someone to suicide must be heard too, because they can carry forward the voices that were lost too soon. Sometimes these groups need different approaches. Not only is that expected, it's welcome.
What we have to say will make many uncomfortable. It's supposed to. That means we need to talk about it more. Until we reach the day where nobody who is thinking about ending their life is too ashamed to ask for help, and receive it, then we need to talk about it more.
Last Wednesday was Bell Let's Talk day in Canada. Since it began only 6 years ago, Bell Canada has raised almost $80 million for mental health programs across the country. That's talk turning into action.
We've taken action too, and we've seen changes. More than 60,000 people spoke up about something that only a few years ago would have gone unspoken.
You should be proud of that.
We've accomplished what we set out to do. That's why it's time for this petition to come to a close. But our efforts will continue, our voice will not be silenced, and our actions will change the world.
In struggle and in triumph, you're not alone.
If you don't believe me, check out part of my own story in the link below (or, right here http://goo.gl/v4YJMo). If nothing else, I hope that it encourages you to reach out to others, and let yourself be reached out to.
I'll leave you with these links, and some homework to go learn more about these important organizations.
- In Canada, the Canadian Mental Health Association (http://www.cmha.ca/) and the Centre for Suicide Prevention (http://www.suicideinfo.ca/)
- In the USA, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (http://afsp.org/) and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/)
- In the UK, Samaritans (http://www.samaritans.org/) and Time to Change (http://www.time-to-change.org.uk/)

Thank you for your voice.
Thank you for your action.
Thank you for you.
