Change AISD's Dress Code Rules
The AISD school dress code is sexist, promotes misogyny, promotes rape culture, promotes the idea that females of all ages are sexual objects, and perpetuates the idea that men can't control themselves, and that women need to hide themselves in order to be safe and learn. It is targeted at women and people of color, they do not allow anything "gang-related". As I was making this petition, at 10:46 am a teacher at Amarillo High School, ripped a peaceful protest sign off of a student's shirt, without the consent of the student. She also ripped the same sign off of a wall, after asking what the sign meant, and belittling me, a student. We are here to get rid of the "no shoulders showing", "no mid-drift", "no pajamas", "fingertip rule", and the "no house shoes" rules. The "no gang-related items" rule is racist. It goes against black culture. It doesn't matter what you wear, men will do what they want. In 6th grade, I was sexually harassed by a boy in most of my classes. I dressed in jeans and a t-shirt or long-sleeve shirt every day. I told the principals, but they did nothing. I got told, "Well were you dressed provocatively?" No, I was not. This is not okay. If my knees, shoulders, and/or belly button turn you on, then you're the one who needs help. Help us get rid of these sexist, and racist rules. We are not here to fight, we are here to make a change.
