Alzheimer's & Dementia - My Right to Die Bill

The Issue

Alzheimer's & Dementia are in my Mum's family. My Mum said to my brother "if I get it, smother me". Obviously he couldn't do that - so I would like the choice that my Mother didn't have.

My Mum went into care in 2012 as it was impossible to care for her needs at home. She'd had Mixed Dementia & Alzheimer's for a few years. She ended up unable to walk or talk,  was doubly incontinent, claw handed & went blind due to undiagnosed cataracts (after all she couldn't tell anyone that couldn't see, the care home didn't notice & by the time we noticed it was too late to do anything). So if she was thirsty, she couldn't tell anyone, or see if there was a glass of water nearby & even if she could she wouldn't have been able to pick it up. She must have felt like she was in purgatory.

I would like the Government to issue a document for Me to sign now, whilst in my right mind, stating that if I develop Alzheimer's or Dementia or both, that when I get to late stage (or a numbered stage if more precise - to be honest I’d rather die before that, but I doubt it will get passed) that I give permission to be put to sleep, any or all of my organs that could benefit a person in need are to be donated, including my eyes, or for my brain & the rest of my body to go to science to further investigate these horrible diseases & find a cure whilst there are still some brain cells left.

I think these need to be optional in case some people don't agree:-

  • Donation of organs
  • Donation of eyes
  • Brain donated to science
  • Body donated to science

Reasons for this:

Alzheimer's & Dementia are cruel diseases. I  do not want to die in the same awful way that my Mother did.

I do not want to clog up a space in a hospital or care home, that some poor patient in a NHS hospital or at home putting immense emotional strain on their loved ones, is waiting for me to die for.

I do not want to be fed, watered, washed & kept alive for as long as possible when there is no point to me being here. I would rather that bed was taken up by someone who had a future ahead of them, as I would not.

I do not want to put a further strain on the already stretched NHS.

I do not want put my loved ones through this terribly long, heartbreakingly sad, goodbye. I love them, they do not deserve to watch me suffer for years & years, deteriorating & dying very slowly & horribly in front of their poor eyes. It is not called "the long goodbye" for without reason.

They say that Alzheimer's & Dementia patients have 1 foot in this world & 1 foot in the next. I personally would like both feet to be in the next.

This is My decision - My right to die if I should end up in that position. I would like the Government to issue a legal document as soon as possible, before I potentially develop either or both of these awful diseases, that allows this.

The Assisted Dying bill won’t cover Alzheimer’s & Dementia sufferers as they will not be in their right minds to be get through the safe guarding / coercion requirements. This bill would.

Obviously, there will be people that will disagree with this & I respect their views. They do not have to sign the petition or request the document once it gets approved, but if you can’t sign it for your own sake, please sign it for mine.
