We, the undersigned students of Alverno College, are writing to express our strong desire to reinstate the December 2024 commencement ceremony. As students who have diligently worked towards our degrees, we believe it is our right to celebrate this significant milestone at a time that aligns with our actual completion of the academic requirements.

We understand that the college is proposing to hold the commencement ceremony in May 2024, prior to the official conclusion of our degree programs. However, we respectfully disagree with this decision for the following reasons:

1. Academic Integrity: The December ceremony holds symbolic importance as it marks the culmination of our academic journey. Attending a ceremony before completing our studies undermines the integrity of the degree and diminishes the significance of our achievements.

2. Financial Investment: As paying students, we have invested substantial financial resources into our education. We believe that part of this investment includes the right to participate in a commencement ceremony that properly acknowledges our dedication and hard work.

3. Timing and Convenience: Holding the ceremony in December allows for a smoother transition for graduates who may be starting new jobs, pursuing further education, or relocating. It also provides families and loved ones with ample time to plan and attend the event.

4. Tradition and Recognition: December commencement ceremonies have been a longstanding tradition at our college, providing graduates with a sense of tradition and belonging within the academic community. Denying us this opportunity detracts from the recognition and celebration we deserve.

In light of these concerns, we respectfully request that the college reconsider its decision and reinstate the December 2024 commencement ceremony. We believe that honoring this tradition is not only fair to the graduating class but also upholds the values of academic excellence and student appreciation that Alverno College stands for.

We urge the administration to engage in dialogue with student representatives to find a mutually agreeable solution that respects the academic achievements and aspirations of the graduating class.
