Alternatives to single use plastic bags at Maxi Pincourt

Alternatives to single use plastic bags at Maxi Pincourt
The Issue
To: Marc-André Deschamps, Director of Maxi Pincourt
The Canadian Government is placing a ban on single use plastics sometime this year (https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/news/2021/12/government-of-canada-moving-forward-with-banning-harmful-single-use-plastics0.html LINK TO BAN DETAILS ). This is not early enough, as 15 billion plastic bags are found in our Canadian oceans every year. This is partly due to big corporations such as Maxi where the plastic bags are used at a rapid rate and produced at an even faster rate due to the demand. Small changes like swapping our single use bags for reusable bags at our local stores will lower this volume of waste in our local environment. The Pincourt location is the closest maxi on the south shore for majority of their clients, so usage of plastic bags is higher due to the high level of clients they receive. This brand of store (Maxi) in particular is the largest division of their supermarket chains under the company Loblaws. By the time it is banned they will still have plastic bags and will continue to distribute them to “sell what they have left”, however there are a few solutions:
1.Avoid plastic by bringing your own reusable bags or keep reusing your plastic bags as much as possible
2.Demand changes now by signing this petition for them to start investing in single use alternatives such as paper bags, compostable bags, and selling reusable bags at a lower price so people do not have to pay a large sum for a single bag
The single use bags are harmful to our surrounding environments because they release greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and do not degrade even if you do dispose of them. When they do reach the landfill, they will not degrade for 1,000 years and all those years it is emitting toxic gases into the air. This can be changed one small step at a time starting by asking our local corporations to make this change. By signing this petition, you are asking Marc-André Deschamps, the director of the Maxi Pincourt to ban plastic bags at the store and require customers to bring their own bags, or buy reusable ones.
