Alternative Watering Mandate - Save Gardeners' & Plants in California

Alternative Watering Mandate - Save Gardeners' & Plants in California
Why this petition matters
On June 1, 2022, many water providers throughout Southern California, including Triunfo Water & Sanitation District and the Las Virgines Municipal Water District, have enforced strict and illogical outdoor watering regulations, limiting outdoor watering to just ONE DAY per week. While 15 minutes per each sprinkler station is permitted on the watering day ONCE per week, many types of plants and grasses native to our region require less time for watering spread out on multiple days in one week. As a 17 year-old gardener who services properties for weekly yard maintenance in Ventura and Los Angeles County, I can assure you these current regulations will result in a loss of life for all non drought tolerant plants and grasses, which make up a large percentage of yards in California. These regulations will not only kill the beautiful nature around us, but will impact my job as a gardener, my fellow gardeners' jobs, and will significantly increase the risk for wildfires. If there are no living plants, there's no purpose for me and the thousands of hard working gardeners that work in California every day, who work countless hours outdoors to support their families and make a living. Thus said, my alternative solution that is much more logical and conserves the same amount of (or more) water is to continue to limit outdoor watering to 3 days per week instead, at a maximum of 5 minutes per station, which is the equivalent of 15 minutes one day per week. Because many flowers and plants require as little water as 10 minutes total a week, the sprinklers for those stations can run as little as 2-3 minutes on 3 different days per week rather than 1 day a week for 15 minutes. Moisture in lawns and soil will NOT hold over an entire week of one day a week watering at a wasteful 15 minutes, and will have a significantly greater survival rate with my alternative watering plan, which will save as much if not more water than the current plan. I urge you to sign this petition in order to protect my gardening maintenance business, my fellow gardeners and their businesses, and the life of almost all plants in Southern California. Thank you for reading.
