The Issue

As a resident of North Plains, I am appealing to our community's leaders to approve the expansion of Ziply Fiber into our area. Our community has so far been stifled by limited choices, and a monopoly exists that is affecting our wallets greatly. Currently, we are subjected to Comcast Xfinity's high pricing, charging between $70 to $140 for internet-only services. This is well above the national average for broadband internet, which according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is approximately $60 per month.

Ziply Fiber, a competitor offering potentially lower rates and reliable service, sought to expand its coverage into our community, but was rejected due to disagreement over a proposed 5% taxation on their services. To make matters worse, this tax is not even required of Xfinity Internet Customers. Based on ORS 305.822, statewide internet is not taxed in any county, which creates an unfair disadvantage for potential entrants into the market.

In these modern times, access to affordable, quality internet service is more than just a convenience – it is a necessity. Our community deserves a choice in providers and a chance at more affordable rates. In the interest of fairness and in the spirit of free competition, we urge the local government to reconsider its stance and allow Ziply Fiber to expand into North Plains, Oregon.

Please stand with us in this fight for fair and affordable internet access. Sign this petition to pave the way for greater competition and better rates.
