Allow Young Individuals to Wear Lash Extensions in Halley Academy

The Issue

As a person who believes that individual expression can be a stepping stone towards confidence building, it's profoundly personal to me to bring forth this pressing issue. A considerable number of young individuals in our society struggle with mental health issues and self-image. However, they find solace in personal grooming aspects like makeup or wearing lash extensions, which offer a small boost of confidence that could altogether change their day for the better.

Yet, it is disheartening to witness the current regulations that restrict young individuals in school from wearing lash extensions. This limitation interferes with their freedom of expression and can indirectly contribute to their mental setbacks.

We live in an era where body and self-expression through personal style has become a vital part of young individual's identities. According to the Mental Health Foundation, a significant correlation exists between body image and mental health in young people (Mental Health Foundation, 2019). Hence, what may seem as 'just' lashes to some people can mean a whole lot more to these young minds.

Undeniably, schools are a place for education, but they should also be a conducive environment where students feel confident and comfortable to express themselves. Permitting them to wear lash extensions would be a simple, yet meaningful step towards creating such an environment.

This change is not only about the physical act of wearing lash extensions but also about encouraging individualism, boosting self-esteem, and recognising makeup as a form of self-expression, not rebellion.

We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider the existing regulations and allow young individuals to wear lash extensions in school.

Wearing eyelashes, whether natural or artificial, does not impact the learning or teaching process in an educational setting. Eyelashes are a personal aesthetic choice that do not interfere with cognitive abilities, concentration or the ability to convey and absorb information. Education is primarily driven by the quality of instruction, engagement and the commitment of both teachers and students, none of which are influenced by the presence or style of one’s eyelashes. In fact, for certain students who struggle with self-image issues, wearing eyelashes can boost their confident and self-esteem, contributing to a more positive and focused learning experience. Therefore, concerns about eyelashes are irrelevant to the core objectives of education.
