The issue
As a student in years 7-10, I find the limitations on device usage during 1st and 2nd breaks particularly frustrating. During these breaks, I aim to be productive, catch up on assignments, and further my understanding by accessing online resources. Unfortunately, the current rules at our school prevent me from effectively utilizing these crucial periods for academic growth and homework completion.
The digital world is an increasingly integral part of education. According to a report by the Pew Research Center, 84% of teenagers feel that the internet is very important to their education. It enables them to access a wealth of information and learning tools that may not be readily available within the confines of a traditional classroom setting. By not allowing students to use their devices during breaks, we are limiting our ability to learn and grow our skills independently.
Furthermore, device usage during breaks could even enhance social interaction as students may collaborate online on projects, share educational resources, or explore creative outlets together, which would otherwise remain untapped.
Allowing device usage would not only improve our academic performance and engagement but also align school policies with modern educational practices. Schools similar to ours have successfully implemented such policies, resulting in boosted student morale and higher academic achievements according to a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology.
Therefore, I urge the school administration to consider revising the current policy to permit device usage during 1st and 2nd breaks for students in years 7-10. This change would represent a significant step toward fostering an environment that respects students' needs and prepares us for a technologically driven world.
