Allow women to legally carry approved pepper spray
Allow women to legally carry approved pepper spray
The Issue
What do we want the Government to do?
We want the UK Government to create a safe, legal permit system that allows women to carry an approved, non-lethal defensive spray (such as pepper spray) for personal protection. This would include background checks, safety training, and strict rules to prevent misuse.
Why do we want the Government to do it?
Violence against women and girls in the UK has reached a crisis point. Many women no longer feel safe walking home, travelling, or going out at night. Yet current laws make it illegal to carry even a small can of pepper spray for protection.
We believe women should have the right to protect themselves responsibly and lawfully.
We are asking for:
A regulated permit system, with police vetting and proof of need before issue.
Mandatory training on responsible use and legal limits.
Only approved, low-strength sprays designed for temporary, non-lethal defence.
Severe penalties for anyone who misuses or sells sprays illegally.
Pilot programmes in one area of England, Scotland, wales and N.Ireland to test safety, effectiveness, and public impact before any wider rollout.
This is not about promoting violence. It is about giving women a fair, legal, and safe means of self-defence when facing genuine danger.
No woman should have to choose between breaking the law and protecting herself.
