Allow Veterinarians to Discuss CBD Use for Your Pet

Allow Veterinarians to Discuss CBD Use for Your Pet

The Issue

The use of CBD has exploded over the last few years, and its use in pets has also become equally popular.  Veterinarians are currently not allowed to even have a discussion about CBD with their clients in the state of New Jersey.

I have been practicing veterinary medicine for several years and my clients come to me for recommendations regarding CBD on a weekly basis.  It is tremendously frustrating to have to dodge the question or attach a disclaimer to every word I say on the subject.  I love pets and their humans!  I want them to come to me with concerns about the well-being of their furry loved ones.  I go to work every day with a smile because I get to do something that truly makes a difference.  But, when it comes to this very popular supplement, our hands are tied and our mouths are gagged.  I also understand that this is a grey area (when I comes to recommendation, prescription, use and administration etc). I am not asking for permission to dispense this, distribute this, or even overtly recommend this.  I just want to be able to have a discussion and give my clients the most up to date information, go over risks and help them understand what this product is.  Helping my clients without fear for my license, being able to have an exchange of ideas and eventually getting a consensus statement from the AVMA would be a great help in navigating use of this new and very popular supplement in pets.
