Allow URI to become a wet campus to ensure student safety

Allow URI to become a wet campus to ensure student safety
The Issue
The University of Rhode Island (URI) currently enforces a dry campus policy, prohibiting the possession and consumption of alcohol on its premises. While the intention behind this policy might be to create a safe and sober learning environment, it inadvertently pushes students to seek off-campus locations to consume alcohol. This practice has significant repercussions, particularly increasing the risk of drunk driving incidents in Narragansett and its surrounding areas.
Drunk driving poses a severe threat to the safety of students and the local community. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person dies every 52 minutes due to drunk driving in the United States. By not allowing alcohol on campus, URI is inadvertently contributing to these statistics, as students venture out to nearby bars and parties, often leading to hazardous situations on their return journeys.
Implementing policies that permit controlled alcohol consumption on campus could dramatically reduce these risks. Establishing a campus bar and allowing fraternities, sororities, and other sanctioned groups to host events in a regulated environment could ensure safety and supervision. It would also minimize the need for students to travel off-campus, thus reducing the likelihood of accidents. Furthermore, other universities with regulated wet campus policies have successfully created safer environments for their students. For example, the University of Florida and the University of Wisconsin have successfully integrated such policies without compromising academic integrity.
A wet campus policy aligns URI with modern collegiate environments, promoting responsibility rather than prohibition. It empowers students to make informed decisions with the proper guidance and safeguards. Additionally, this shift would not only enhance safety but also foster a more inclusive and engaging campus community.
We urge the administration of the University of Rhode Island to reconsider its dry campus policy and adopt a more pragmatic approach by introducing a regulated wet campus policy. This change is not just about permitting alcohol; it is about prioritizing student safety above all. By signing this petition, we can make a collective effort towards a safer and more responsible campus. Please add your voice to call for a change that ensures the well-being of all students. Sign this petition today and help us make URI a safer place for everyone.
