Allow Tree Planting at Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery

Allow Tree Planting at Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery

The Issue

As a concerned citizen of Ontario, Canada, I am writing this petition to urge Infrastructure Ontario to allow the planting of donated trees at the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery without any further archeological or environmental studies. This issue is personal to me because I firmly believe that Toronto will not meet its goal of 40% tree cover by 2050 without the participation of all landowners.

Growing up in Toronto, I have witnessed the gradual decline in green spaces and tree cover within our city. With rapid urbanization and development projects taking precedence over environmental conservation, it is crucial for us to take immediate action towards preserving and enhancing our natural surroundings.

The Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery, located in Etobicoke, holds historical significance as a resting place for individuals who were once patients at the hospital including 24 WW1 veterans and more than 12 Indigenous persons. Sadly, over time, this cemetery has become neglected and lacks proper maintenance. By allowing the planting of donated trees within its premises, we can transform this forgotten space into a beautiful memorial park that honors both nature and history.

It is important to note that conducting further archaeological or environmental studies would only delay this much-needed initiative. Instead of investing time and resources into redundant assessments, we should focus on implementing practical solutions that benefit our community as a whole.

According to recent data from Forests Ontario (source: forestsontario.ca), urban areas in Ontario are experiencing significant tree loss due to various factors such as disease outbreaks and land development activities. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for all landowners – including public institutions like Infrastructure Ontario – to actively contribute towards increasing tree cover.

By allowing tree planting at the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery without unnecessary delays or bureaucratic hurdles, we can make a positive impact on Toronto's overall green infrastructure. Not only will this initiative help restore biodiversity within our city, but it will also provide a serene and peaceful environment for visitors to reflect upon the past.

I kindly request Infrastructure Ontario to consider the importance of this initiative and support the planting of donated trees at the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery. Let us work together towards creating a greener, more sustainable future for Ontario.

Thank you for your attention and consideration.

Sincerely,
Hark Savinsky
