The Issue

My child is transgender, and due to new legislation, we have no legal route to access essential hormone therapy treatment. This has had a detrimental impact on my child's mental health, leaving us exhausted and without hope after exploring every possible avenue. As a parent, all I want is to ensure my child grows up healthy, happy, and true to themselves, but the barriers in place are causing unnecessary suffering.

The current restrictions in the UK prevent transgender teenagers from accessing hormone therapy through the NHS until they are older. This delay not only contradicts best medical practices but also goes against the principles of respecting and supporting young people's identities. Medical experts agree that earlier access to hormone therapy can significantly reduce the risk of mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, which are alarmingly common in transgender youth.

Hormone therapy, when prescribed and monitored by medical professionals, is a safe and effective treatment that allows transgender teens to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. This can lead to better mental health outcomes and an enhanced quality of life. Moreover, with proper consent from parents and guidance from healthcare providers, beginning hormone therapy at age 14 can be both responsible and beneficial.

Countries like the Netherlands have set a precedent by offering medical pathways for transgender youth that lead to positive outcomes, proving that it is both feasible and effective to provide these services. Denying access to hormone therapy only pushes these vulnerable teenagers toward clandestine and unregulated alternatives, which can be dangerous.

The UK is at a critical juncture. By adapting our healthcare policies to allow NHS hormone therapy access from age 14 with the necessary safeguards, we can lead by example in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all our youth.

I urge you to sign this petition to advocate for a change in legislation, ensuring our healthcare system recognises and supports the needs and rights of transgender teens. Let's come together and make a difference for individuals like my child, who deserve access to appropriate and timely medical care.
