Allow townhomes in Riverwood subdivision to mow their own yards

The Issue
Residents of the Riverwood subdivision are calling for a change in the current Homeowners Association (HOA) policy regarding yard maintenance for townhomes. Currently, townhome owners are charged a monthly fee of $132, which covers trash pickup, playground maintenance, and snow removal. However, they are required to use the HOA's yard mowing service, which is not optional. In stark contrast, single-family homeowners in the same community pay only $52 per month and are permitted to mow their own lawns.
This discrepancy has led to a growing sense of unfairness among townhome residents who are advocating for the choice to manage their own yards. By doing so, they wish to lower their HOA fees to align more closely with what is charged to single-family homes, thereby achieving financial equity within the subdivision.
The ability to opt out of the HOA's mowing services could significantly decrease financial strain on townhome owners without compromising the community's aesthetic standards. Most residents of the townhomes believe they can maintain their yards to the same standard if not better than the current service.
Moreover, empowering residents to take care of their own properties fosters a sense of community pride and autonomy. Ending the mandatory yard service contract for townhomes would not only be a fiscal relief but also a step towards more equitable HOA policies for all residents.
We urge the Riverwood HOA board to review this policy and consider making yard maintenance optional for townhomes, allowing the community to move toward a fairer, more balanced structure. Townhome residents deserve the same autonomy and financial consideration as their single-family counterparts.
