Allow therapy dogs in school buildings

Allow therapy dogs in school buildings
The Issue
Therapy dogs have the power to transform students’ lives in ways that are deeply emotional and genuinely impactful. Studies show that therapy dogs help reduce stress in 60% of students, increase social behaviors by 54% in children with autism, and significantly improve emotional well-being. But beyond the numbers, I’ve seen it with my own eyes—and I’ve felt it in my own life. When my teacher, Ms. Wylie, brought her therapy dog into our school, something changed. I began to smile more, feel less anxious, and slowly started getting the sparkle back in my eyes. That dog wasn’t just an animal—it was a friend, a comfort, and a safe presence in a world that often felt too harsh.
Therapy dogs help students cope with depression, anxiety, trauma, and social isolation. I used to sit alone, watching others laugh and make friends, while I stayed quiet, feeling like I didn’t belong. But the therapy dog gave me what people didn’t—a true friend, one without judgment, full of love and comfort. And I wasn’t the only one. Every student in our school felt that unconditional love, and when the therapy dog had to leave, everything changed. I witnessed firsthand how student behavior declined—there were serious fights, suspensions, expulsions, and rising tension in our halls. It wasn’t just a coincidence. Without that calming presence, the emotional support many students depended on was suddenly gone.
Therapy dogs offer something essential: a non-judgmental companion, a source of comfort in stressful environments, and a way for students to open up and heal. Please, give students the chance to experience what I—and so many others—have felt. Support therapy dog programs in schools. Sometimes, all a student needs is a loyal friend to sit beside them when no one else will.
