Allow the Wear of Beards in the U.S. Army Without Exemption
The Issue
I am a soldier in the U.S. Army and I have a beard due to a medical condition caused by shaving. This is not an isolated incident; many service members face similar challenges. The current policy only allows for beards on religious grounds or for specific medical profiles, but we believe this should be expanded to allowance for wear to all service members with in a set standard.
The US military's strict grooming standards are based on maintaining uniformity and discipline, but they can also cause unnecessary discomfort and health issues for those who struggle with skin conditions exacerbated by regular shaving. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, nearly 45% of men have experienced some form of skin irritation from shaving (Journal of Investigative Dermatology). https://www.jidonline.org/article/S0022-202X(15)30693-X/fulltext
We propose that the U.S Military revises its policy to allow all service members to grow beards without needing an exemption. This change would not only alleviate health issues related to shaving but also reflect our nation's diversity more accurately.
Please sign this petition if you believe in promoting comfort, health, and inclusivity within our armed forces.
