The Issue

My name is Fran Harrison and I am a student who has faced unexpected challenges because of the restrictive nature of my school's dress code. This policy, which outright bans flared pants, has not only affected my comfort but also my academic performance and participation.

In today's educational environments, it's essential to create a space where students feel both comfortable and free to express their individuality. Clothing, for many of us, isn't merely a matter of style—it's a matter of feeling secure, confident, and ready to engage fully in our education. But unfortunately, due to these strict dress codes, I have been isolated and unable to perform and participate effectively in my educational activities. This isn’t just about a piece of clothing; it’s about how these policies can inadvertently hamper a student’s ability to feel at ease, focus, and learn.

It's worth noting that schools are spaces where inclusivity should be prioritized. In numerous studies, including a comprehensive research piece by the Boston University School of Education, providing students with the freedom to choose their clothing within a reasonable framework has been linked to improved behavior and academic outcomes. Further, the University of California's educational psychology department found that students who are comfortable in their attire are more likely to participate in class discussions and physical activities.

What we are advocating for is not the complete removal of dress codes, but rather a reconsideration that allows bottoms like flares, which suit many students' preferences and don't pose any real distractions in the learning environment. Personally, flares make me feel more at ease, allowing me to focus better on my studies, as opposed to pants that feel restrictive and uncomfortable.

By signing this petition, you’re supporting a move towards a more inclusive and understanding educational environment. Let's make a change for more flexibility and consider enabling flares as part of our attire options. Please sign this petition to help us urge school administrators to reassess the dress code and foster a more inclusive atmosphere where all students can thrive.
