Allow the Ridgeline Eagles Varsity Boys Basketball Team to Participate in the Championship

The Issue

This is a direct plea from a heartbroken aunt. My nephew and his dedicated basketball team, the Ridgeline Eagles, have been unjustly stripped of the opportunity to compete in their well-deserved championship match. These young athletes have committed significant time and energy into their sport, only to be sidelined by a mistake made by the administration. In question is the eligibility of one player, due to a reclassification. What we have now learned is that with reclassifications only a certain amount of time is supposed to be played. Without prior knowledge of this rule, that time was exceeded. Once deemed ineligible, they not only stripped the entire team of the opportunity to play in the championship game, but cleared their record to show 0-18. It is absolutely devastating that a group of young men, who put their heart and souls onto the court every single game are suffering consequences because the people in charge, the ADULTS, didn’t do their due diligence. With a heavy heart, the player in question is more than willing to sit out of the championship game to resolve this issue. For whatever reason, that is not good enough.

This decision not only affects the ineligible player but distresses the entire team, penalizing them for errors outside of their control. Basketball, like all sports, cultivates more than physical skills; it is about unity, resilience, and fair play. Denying these boys their rightful place in the championship contradicts these fundamental values.

High school athletics are a crucial part of education, and this decision profoundly impacts Ridgeline student morale. Approximately 7.8 million students participate in high school athletics in the U.S., and they experience academic success, better mental health, and increased school engagement (source: NFHS.org). Pulling the rug from under these young athletes can have significant repercussions on their growth and development.

We urge the appropriate administrative body to reconsider this decision and allow the Ridgeline Eagles varsity boys basketball team to compete in the championship match. Punishing an entire team for an administrative error is unjust. We ask for equity, fairness, and consideration for these young men. We urge you to sign this petition and stand for justice for our student-athletes.
