Allow the purchase of hot foods using SNAP EBT.

Allow the purchase of hot foods using SNAP EBT.

The Issue

Every year, about 42 million Americans receive a stipend for food through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps. SNAP is a federally funded program intended to help those at or below the poverty line receive the funding they need in order to meet nutritional requirements. Despite the myth about fraud surrounding SNAP, this program has the lowest fraud rate amongst governmental programs. In fact, SNAP recipients are encouraged to buy healthy products in bulk and are encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle starting with nutritional intakes.

Despite the advantages of SNAP for low-income individuals and families, the program still has its limitations. SNAP recipients cannot use their EBT card to purchase hot foods.

The idea behind this controlling limitation is simple. SNAP is intended to help low-income individuals and families meet their nutritional needs and the money they receive is supposed to be stretched down to the penny. With that said, hot foods are considered expensive, convenient, and a commodity for the middle to upper class. Limiting the purchase of hot foods to SNAP recipients is implying that low-income individuals and families are not worthy of this commodity. In other words, someone from low-income households should not have the same advantages as those not receiving SNAP.

While this limitation varies by state, it’s time we stand together and put an end to this limitation all together.

Allowing the purchase of hot foods using SNAP EBT cards will give the autonomy and dignity for lower income individuals and families to purchase what they choose. Many recipients of SNAP are low-income elders, single parents, working moms, and young children. Not every household has the bandwidth to cook meals from scratch. This limitation also assumes that immigrant households will be able to purchase all the ingredients they need to cook their cultural foods. Having the autonomy to purchase hot foods not only saves time for many individuals, it also gives back the dignity of being able to choose what they want to eat. It’s time to stop dictating how low-income people should live.

It’s time that we seriously consider the limitation to the usage of SNAP EBT cards. Signing the petition today shows that we stand united despite our socioeconomic status. Every American deserves the autonomy and dignity to make their own personal choices, especially when it comes to food. Let’s stop trying to dictate how people should live just because they are receiving government benefits. Signing the petition today will give back the convenience and time that many working households need.
